Raising Awareness: Phil's Walk for Prostate Cancer

It was a privilege to recently meet Phil Roberts, a passionate local campaigner who gives both his time and money to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

Every March for the last four years, Phil has taken on a personal challenge - walking 11,000 steps every single day throughout the month to raise awareness about a disease that affects 1 in 8 men in the UK. This year alone, he walked over 400,000 steps.

But Phil doesn’t stop there. As he walks, he puts up posters around his village of Llanfairpwll, determined to make sure as many people as possible hear his message: early diagnosis saves lives.

He asked me to help spread that message further and I’m proud to do so.

Why it matters

In Wales, around 2,600 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. It is the most common cancer in men, but early detection makes a huge difference.

One of the most worrying statistics is that 19% of men in Wales are diagnosed too late for curative treatment. That’s nearly 1 in 5 men who could miss out on life-saving care, often because symptoms aren’t obvious or because they feel unsure about seeking help.

Phil’s message is simple but powerful: we need more awareness. Whether it’s thinking about your own health, encouraging a friend to get checked, or simply starting a conversation, now is the time to talk about prostate cancer.
